Nieuw Statendam

Ålesund is one of the few Art Nouveau towns left in the world. This lovely and unique coastal city can best be enjoyed on foot.

The coastal city of Ålesund, with a population of 41,000, is the commercial capital of the More-Romsdal District. The city boasts one of Norway's largest fishing harbors, with a rich and lively history behind it, including a devastating fire in 1904 which gave rise to a popular expression of surprise in Norway, "I haven't heard anything like that since Ålesund burned down." The fire left 10,000 people homeless and destroyed the whole city center. Ålesund was rebuilt in Art Nouveau style with building materials from all over Europe. It is now one of very few Art Nouveau towns in the world, and inhabitants and visitors alike value its atmosphere and distinctive character.

Then, head out of town to the Atlantic Sea Park situated along the oceanfront at Tueneset. The park occupies 1½ acres of coastal scenery with fishing spots, hiking trails, swimming sites and outstanding diving venues. The Atlantic Sea Park contains exhibition space and is the largest aquarium in Scandinavia. It is uniquely built into coastal surroundings and adapted to modern exhibition principles. Large landscape aquariums teem with life direct from the ocean, with an emphasis on the western regions. you can see what the marine life is like under the ferry quay, in the ocean current, between islets and skerries, and in the depths of Storfjord. Enjoy watching the huge fish and discover the 'silver of the sea'.

The island of Giske is known as the birthplace of the famous Viking King Gangerolv, or Rollo, who conquered Normandy in AD 911 and was the antecedent of William the Conqueror. With its powerful families, the island was a seat of power in the Viking Age. Watch for the Giske Chapel -- a very simple and starkly beautiful Roman marble church dating from 1135. The church was built as a private place of worship for the famous Giske Viking family and its interior was restored in 1756. It is surrounded by old headstones and a manicured lawn.

Your day begins with a visit to the Norwegian Mountaineering Center -- a living activity center opened in 2016. Once a pursuit of the wealthy elite, climbing is now a popular activity for a broad spectrum of Norwegians. The diverse interpretive installations here chart the sport's development. Watch a 15-minute movie showcasing extreme outdoor activities in the spectacular Romsdal Mountains.

Woldstad Farm is beautifully situated on Isfjord and has been owned and operated by the Woldstad family since 1654. The farm consists of 12 buildings, ranging from a boathouse to the summer barn, set high in the mountains. Some of the buildings date back to the 1500s.

This spectacular scenic drive takes you along Romsdalsfjord which melds into Innfjord. The road follows the shoreline through several villages to Tresfjord for a photo stop.

Your destination today is the great Atlantic Ocean Road -- a five-mile series of bridges and causeways zigzagging from island to island, right out to where the mainland ends and the great ocean begins. The overwhelming might and majesty of the ocean is brought home to you here, and it's quite an unforgettable vista and easily one of the most scenic drives in the world.

Setting off from the beautifully-situated village of Åndalsnes, you'll head along the Rauma River as mountains rise up dramatically on both sides. Mount Romsdalshorn, at 5,000 feet is on one side, with Trolltindane at 5,100 feet on the other. You'll drive close to the famous Troll Wall, with its vertical, overhanging wall.

The road north leads through rolling green countryside to medieval Canterbury -- site of the magnificent Canterbury Cathedral. Learn of the cathedral's epic history from your guide as you view the exterior -- it was built in two stages: AD 1070-1184 and 1391-1505. Enter the cathedral for an unguided tour of the building in which Archbishop Thomas Becket was murdered in 1170 -- a story immortalized in Chaucer's Canterbury Tales. There will be an opportunity to browse in the shops of Canterbury before returning to the ship at Dover.

Travel by motorcoach a short distance on the main freeway; then you're off into the hinterland, driving along country roads through the quaint and scenic county of Kent. You'll pass small villages, farms and the hamlets of Tenterden and Northiam. Drive down charming High Street of Northiam, where the buildings are clad in their original façades dating from the 16th to 18th centuries.

This tour is designed for guest who prefer to see the sights from the motorcoach with little or no walking involved. View sights such as Westminster Abbey and St Paul's Cathedral, Big Ben and Buckingham Palace. Lunch at an authentic English pub is included on this full-day excursion.

Board a riverboat for a scenic cruise through London on the famous River Thames. Your vessel features a glass observation deck, as well as an open-air promenade deck. You'll see the neo-Gothic Parliament buildings that dominate the riverbank, and pass the Tower of London where William the Conqueror created London's notorious royal prison and the site of some very bloody executions. The iconic, Victorian-era Tower Bridge is situated adjacent to the Tower of London.

Kayaking is a wonderful way to immerse yourself in nature. A fun and easy activity that offers breathtaking scenery with gentle exercise. A short walk with your instructor will bring you to a small beach where your adventure begins. After a safety briefing, board your kayak and glide into the calm waters with your paddle in hand.

Your tour starts with a drive through the spectacular and steep Måbødalen Valley. The road leads to the huge Hardanger Mountain Plateau -- actually the largest mountain plateau in Northern Europe. It is also part of Norway's largest National Park.

Drive through the village of Eidfjord before you continue up the steep Måbødalen Valley. The old road to the top was once only four miles, made up of an alarming series of hairpin bends carved precariously into the mountainside. Today there is a new route -- appreciably safer, albeit less thrilling. It leads to the enormous Hardanger Mountain Plateau -- the largest mountain plateau in Northern Europe and one of the few places in Norway where wild reindeer herds still live untended. Keep your eyes peeled; but they are elusive creatures -- brilliantly camouflaged and thus seldom seen.

A must-do for Formula One fans, this outing will acquaint you firsthand with one of the world's greatest and most challenging motor racing circuits -- that of the Monaco Grand Prix. This is easily the most famous 'street circuit' in the Formula One calendar.

From Monaco, your motor coach will take the Middle Corniche road to the medieval village of Eze, perched on a craggy peak above the Mediterranean. Often called the eagle's nest, Eze is closed to traffic, so you will walk along its steep narrow cobblestone streets to explore its hidden corners.

Discover the history and charm of Monaco during a fascinating walk through one of the world's smallest city-states. Perched above the Cote d'Azur, the Old Town boasts mesmerizing views of the Mediterranean Sea below and exudes an aura of elegance, combining Belle Epoque architecture with a stunning natural beauty.

Travel by motor coach for a scenic drive along the Middle Corniche road. You're headed to the beautiful medieval village of Eze, clinging to the rocky outcropping on the mountainside.

A guided walk through Oslo takes you past historic buildings, cozy cafés and art galleries. In the city's Golden Center, view the splendid monuments and buildings around Karl Johan Street -- the Parliament building, the University, the National Theatre, the Royal Palace and the police horse stables.

A short walk from the pier brings you to the biking center, not far away. Gear up with a bicycle and helmet and listen to some safety instructions before you venture out in the wonderful city of Oslo.Discover many of the major sights in a fun and relaxed way as this approximately three-hour adventure has you cycling along car-free paths, through parks, down hidden back streets and along the fjord. There is plenty of time for stops and pictures, and no specific fitness level is required.

A pleasant sightseeing drive by motor coach takes you through the center of Oslo, past Akershus Fortress, the Parliament Buildings, the Royal Palace, the National Theatre, Oslo's university and the Nobel Institute.

Discover beautiful Oslo on a brief city tour, with your guide pointing out such memorable highlights as the Royal Palace, Town Hall, the National Theatre and the city's modern center of shops and office blocks. Take a 45- to 60-minute walk at Vigeland Park to view the world's largest collection of sculptures executed by one single artist -- Gustav Vigeland (1869-1943).

Departing from the pier, you guide will provide an interesting commentary as you pass Akershus Fortress and the Opera House. You'll take a guided tour of Vigeland Sculpture Park, created and built by Gustav Vigeland. The park is home to 121 sculptured figures together with the landmark 'Monolith', fountain and bridge. Your guide will escort you through the park, and explain the different sculptures and monuments along the way.

Drive through the center of Oslo, passing Akershus Fortress, the Parliament building, Karl Johan Street, the Royal Palace and the Nobel Institute. The amazing Vigeland Sculpture Park was created and completed by one man -- Gustav Vigeland. Centrally placed in the park is the 55-foot-tall monolith, featuring 121 stone figures of men, women and children climbing on top of each other in their struggle for life. Walk with your guide through the park to see more than 150 stone and bronze sculptures, each symbolizing a different stage in the lifespan of mankind.

Your yellow 'bus' starts out on land and takes you on a panoramic drive through the Netherlands' second city. Watch for the highlights, including the modern architecture of the Weena building situated in the business district. This is a splendid example of art-meets-commerce -- a common theme in Rotterdam. View the Café Rotterdam, Schouwburgplein, Kop van Zuid, and Coolsingel with the Town Hall and central Post Office,

Head out on a scenic journey along the IJssel and enjoy the typical Dutch landscape. Your first stop will be as a 17th century Cheese farm in the countryside. Here you will see firsthand how cheese is made and how you can recognize a 'real Gouda cheese'. You will also have an opportunity to sample some of the cheeses.

The tulip has become a revered symbol of the Netherlands. Keukenhof town is the middle of the most important bulb-growing area in Holland. Originally, the area surrounding Keukenhof was used for hunting and for collecting herbs for the castle -- hence the name Keukenhof, meaning 'the kitchen garden'.

The windmills of Kinderdijk, built in the 1700s, are collectively a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The 19 windmills that remain intact today are lined up along the riverfront, and were used to pump rising water to the canal and thus keep the village dry. Incidentally, the name of this charming village comes from the time of the St Elisabeth flood in 1421, when the villagers found a baby (kind) on the dike (dijk).

Stavanger, center of the oil industry, is the fourth-largest town in Norway. Situated at the entrance to the Gandsfjord, it is somewhat protected from the North Sea. Stavanger is a charming mix of new and old. Close to the harbor, you'll see the wooden, white-painted houses with tiny gardens. These once belonged to sailors and craftsmen. Your helicopter adventure begins with a drive from the pier to the helipad. After takeoff, you'll head eastward towards Lysefjord, which incises an impressive 30 miles into a mountainous massif. It is considered the wildest, least-accessible fjord in the region, surrounded by cliffs rising steeply from the water and worn down by eons of ice erosion. In a few places along the fjord, there is enough space for small, isolated farms to cling to the cliff-sides.

Your hike to Pulpit Rock takes 1½ to 2 hours each way and passes through a variety of different landscapes, including mountains, forest and marshland with some lovely ponds along the way. The distance to the top is about 2½ miles and climbs 1,100 feet in elevation. The last 600 yards are quite spectacular as you walk along a narrow path with steep cliffs on one side and Lysefjord far below on the other.

Stavanger -- Norway's fourth-largest city -- is a charming blend of old and new. Towards the end of the 18th century, Stavanger became a leading commercial and industrial town. Today, the oil industry activities play a leading role in industry and social development both in the town itself and in the surrounding areas.

See the Swords in Rock Monument. It is comprised of three Viking swords forced into the ground, stands more than 30 feet tall, and commemorates the place where Viking King Harald Haarfagre (Fairhair) defeated the last of the regional princes in AD 872 and founded the Kingdom of Norway by uniting the 29 small kingdoms under one crown.

Travel via underwater tunnel to Moster Island -- a bucolic haven of green fields and grazing cows and sheep. Located on Moster Island, Utstein Kloster (monastery) was founded in the 13th century. Take a guided tour of the graceful cloisters and enjoy a music recital in the monastery. Centuries-old beech trees shade the monastery's beautiful grounds. Return to Stavanger, where you have the option of heading directly to the ship by motorcoach or staying in town with your guide to explore the old port's narrow, cobblestone lanes on foot. You will view 18th- and early 19th-century wooden houses along the way.

Your fun, expert-foodie guide takes you on a lovely walk through the heart and soul of Old Stavanger in search of the real flavors of the city. Food samples include canned brisling and smoked salmon at the Breidablikk Museum, fenalår (salted, dried and cured leg of lamb) and herring, coffee, and traditional soft lefse flatbread at the Maritime Museum.

On your way to Ringve Museum today, you will pass through Trondheim's streets and stop at the Nidaros Cathedral for a visit inside. A splendid Gothic structure dating back to the 12th century, this impressive church is built over the grave of St Olaf and boasts gorgeous stained-glass windows.

A panoramic drive takes you through the city center before you head out of town towards Sverresli. Enjoy views of the fjord and wood-clad hills before reaching Bymarka. This is an area of natural landscapes with contrasting scenery -- a haven for the people of Trondheim in both winter and summer.

Head upriver to Fannrem, where you will board the narrow-gauge Thamshavn Railway, originally built to transport ore from the mine to the harbor. It re-opened as a museum railway in 1983, but you'll ride in a carriage that dates back to 1908. This railway line is the only one in Scandinavia with a gauge of 1,000 mm (one meter) and few lines have sharper curves or steeper climbs.

Transfer by bus to the city center, where you'll step aboard the Gråkall line streetcar. This five-mile line opened in 1924. It runs from the city center to Lian, located on Trondheim's lush west side, and the Bymarka, where residents enjoy outdoor activities in both summer and winter.

Your excursion starts from the pier in Eidfjord -- a charming village at the head of the fjord built on sand and gravel moraines from the last major Ice Age, some 8,000 years ago. Your coach follows the road along the River Eid, well known for excellent trout and salmon fishing.

Starting off from the pier in Eidfjord, a scenic drive will take you along the fjord with a short stop at the viewpoint in Bu for photos. On your way to the village of Ulvik, you will drive over the new Hardanger Bridge -- the longest suspension bridge in Norway and one of the longest suspension bridges in the world. Ulvik is a small community with around 650 inhabitants, famous for its cultivation of various fruits, including apples and is the second most important fruit-growing municipality in Norway.

The village of Eidfjord has only about 1,000 inhabitants; however, due to its production of hydroelectric power, it is one of Norway's wealthiest communities.

Departing Exmouth by coach, your first stop will be at the communication towers at the Harold Holt Naval Base. Here, you’ll also see a replica of the one-man submarine used during World War II. Continue to the lighthouse, complete with an air raid warning tower, for magnificent views over the ocean and Exmouth. Next, visit the Jurabi Turtle Centre to learn about these age-old creatures and hopefully you’ll see them on the beach. After a quick stop at Bundegi Beach to snap some photos, return to Exmouth township where your guide will provide a commentary about the history of the town and the points of interest you pass on a brief panoramic drive. Proceed to Charles Knife Gorge where you will see a beautiful limestone plateau, compressed sand and the remnants of a shallow sea.
