Explore landmarks that showcase the splendor of Bangkok and influence of Buddhism and then enjoy a river cruise through the Thonburi district. At the Golden Buddha Temple, you will see a massive statue of Buddha that was once covered with plaster to hide its gold composition from invaders. The Buddha at Wat Phra Keo temple may be even more sacred and priceless as it is carved from a single piece of emerald-green jasper. The temple sits within the Grand Palace complex, a collection of lavishly decorated buildings, bejeweled with gilt and multi-colored glass mosaics, and soaring finials topped with glittering spires. As you will discover, the palace is still used for royal ceremonies and state occasions. A leisurely cruise down the Chao Phraya River and through the canals of one of Bangkok’s most scenic residential areas follows. Along the way, you will see traditional teakwood houses built on stilts, as well as Wat Arun, the glorious Temple of Dawn.

Mingle with the locals as they shop at a bustling morning market in the Silom district of Bangkok before heading to a nearby Hindu temple that welcomes devotees of other religions. The market offers a genuine window into daily life, as the vendors tend to carry useful products rather than souvenirs. While wandering about the many stalls, be sure to sample some of the foods characteristic of Bangkok. The offerings are usually eclectic and could range from grilled river fish to papaya salad to sticky rice desserts. For an authentic glimpse into the spiritual side of Bangkok, you will visit Sri Maha Uma Devi, a temple that Indian immigrants founded in the 19th century during the reign of King Rama IV. The temple was built as a place to worship the benevolent Uma goddess in accordance with Shaktism, one of the denominations of Hinduism. Be sure to notice the top of the temple’s exterior, which is particularly colorful and ornate.

Gain a unique perspective of Bangkok’s waterways and see some of the attractions that highlight the charms of the river and canals. As you cruise the city’s always bustling Chao Phraya River, you will take in picturesque scenes of traditional life on the water. You can expect to see floating grocery stores, water taxis zipping about and teakwood houses built on stilts. In time, you will stop to browse the Royal Barge Museum, which houses the ornately decorated longboats that were once used for royal functions. You might also see a gold-encrusted swan-shaped barge used solely by the king. Wat Arun, known as the Temple of Dawn, will present yet another side of Bangkok, as it features a soaring tower-like spire that symbolizes Mount Meru, which is supposedly the center of the universe.

Discover the charms of the Grand Palace and the Emerald Buddha Temple and see firsthand why they are among the most popular attractions in Bangkok. Considered to be an extraordinary example of an ancient Siamese court, the palace was built in 1782 at the beginning of the Chakri Dynasty. The entire complex sprawls over nearly one square mile in the heart of Bangkok and served as the residence of Thailand’s kings for 150 years. Within the palace compound, you will find the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, which holds a 14th-century statue of Buddha that was carved from a single piece of emerald-green jasper. The king of Thailand changes the Buddha’s robes each season in an elaborate ritual, during which he also sprinkles water over the monks to bring good fortune. Be sure to notice the murals on the temple walls that depict the life of Buddha and steps to enlightenment.

Behold one of the most spectacular private art collections in Asia at the Prasart Museum, which is open by appointment only. Real estate tycoon Prasart Vongsakul created the museum to hold Thai artwork that he spent his life collecting because so much of it was leaving the country. These national treasures are displayed in a collection of classic Thai buildings. Vongsakul personally constructed much of the complex using long-forgotten building techniques. The exhibits display art ranging from prehistoric times to the late-19th century that includes exquisite porcelain and pottery and traditional Thai paintings and furnishings. While meandering about the surrounding gardens, you can expect to see dozens of Buddha statues, shrines and a teak pavilion on stilts above a lotus pond. Much of the foliage was planted because of its association with Thai literature.

Enjoy a glimpse into the past splendor of the Siamese kingdom by visiting the 14th-century city of Ayutthaya, an acclaimed World Heritage site. Founded in 1350, Ayutthaya remained the kingdom’s capital until 1767, when the conquering Burmese destroyed it. As you tour the magnificent excavated ruins, you will behold a collection of towering spires known as prangs and begin to understand the significance of the city, which was once one of the world’s largest, most cosmopolitan urban areas. Be sure to notice the city’s rigid grid layout and the moats and canals around the principal structures. You will also visit the Buddhist temple Wat Mahathat within the complex. The royal summer palace of Bang Pa-In lies nearby on an island in the middle of a lake. An excellent example of classic Thai architecture, it is one of the most photographed buildings in the kingdom.

Swim and snorkel in the stunningly clear waters of a lake surrounded by limestone cliffs, at popular beach and at a marine park not far off the tip of Coron. An outrigger boat will bring you to Kayangan Lake, which you can only reach by walking down a lengthy staircase. You can then swim in the lake’s cool brackish water and perhaps spot shrimp and crabs while snorkeling. Another picturesque locale awaits you at nearby Dicantuman Beach. Precipitous cliffs surround much of this pocket beach, imbuing it with a certain intimacy. You might snorkel just off shore, swim in the crystalline waters and stretch out on the powdery sand and bask in the sun. Following a picnic lunch, you will cruise to Siete Pecados, a marine park of seven islets teeming with colorful fish. Feel free to swim and snorkel once again or remain on board the outrigger and simply take in the beautiful scenery.

Explore the main attractions in and around Coron beginning with an enlightening drive through the heart of downtown. There, you will see Coron’s only Catholic church, waterfront Lualhati Park and the Wet Market, where you will observe a genuine slice of daily life as the residents go about their shopping. A stop at a family-owned cashew store will reveal how these prized nuts are processed. In essence, once the acidic shells are removed, the cashews are toasted, sun-dried, sugar-coated or flavored with garlic powder. Maquinit Hot Spring, the only saltwater hot spring in the Philippines, lies just outside the city limits. You will have the chance to ease into the therapeutic spring and enjoy its soothing mineral-rich water. The mangrove forest that serves as a scenic backdrop will make the experience all the more delightful. Later, while visiting a fishing village, you might strike up a conversation with the residents and learn about their livelihoods.

Observe the wonders underwater by snorkeling in a brackish lake and in the ocean or simply enjoy a refreshing swim at both locales. After settling into an outrigger boat, you will head for Kayangan Lake, a crystal-clear body of water that steep limestone cliffs rim. To reach the lake, you must walk down a lengthy staircase, but it is well worth the effort. Snorkelers can expect to see brightly colored fish and perhaps shrimp and crabs in the rocks along the lake bottom. The aquamarine water is also ideal for swimming, as it is typically as smooth as glass. In time, you will cruise to Siete Pecados, a marine park of seven islets teeming with colorful fish such as Moorish idols, triggerfish, Napoleon wrasses and pygmy seahorses. You will also have option of swimming near the outrigger or remaining on board and taking in the scenery. The view of Coron from the marine park is particularly memorable.

Enjoy a leisurely cruise in an outrigger boat along Coron’s immensely picturesque northern shore, where you will eventually stop to swim at a beach that rims a steep cliff. Be sure to look for sea turtles as you pass Siete Pecados marine park; they are often seen just beneath the water’s surface. Nearby, you will find the entrances to Kayangan Lake and Barracuda Lake, both of which contain brackish water, as the limestone-encased lakes were once part of the sea. That same sort of limestone forms cliffs that separate the two bodies of water at nearby Twin Lagoon and continue around much of the shoreline. You will then cruise over several coral gardens teeming with marine life before reaching Banol Beach, where you will be free to relax as you please and swim in the refreshing waters. The sugar-white sand, turquoise sea and backdrop of towering limestone cliffs are extraordinarily photogenic.

Snorkel two reefs and a sunken shipwreck teeming with marine life before relaxing on a beach that precipitous limestone cliffs shelter. You will reach the sites on an outrigger boat that will make the adventure all the more enjoyable. There is no telling what you will observe just off Balinsasayaw Resort although tropical fish are especially abundant. Twin Peaks Reef is another favorite snorkeling spot where you may see an even greater variety of marine creatures. Graceful stingrays, bi-colored parrotfish and scissortail sergeant majors are commonly seen around the coral reef. Then, there is Skeleton Wreck, a snorkeling and dive site named for the skeletal remains of a World War II Japanese gunboat. It lies in about 15 feet of water. A bit farther down the coast, you will stop at Beach 91, a beautiful stretch of sand that invites relaxing and doing nothing more ambitious than basking in the sun.
